NBC's Today Show Utilizes Wyse Winterm Thin Clients To Keep Business Operations Running Smoothly

NBC Uses Server-based Computing And Wyse Thin Clients To Set Up Emergency Production Offices During Recent Staff Relocation

Wyse® Technology, the worldwide leader in secure managed thin clients, today announced that Wyse Winterm™ thin clients enabled the production staff of NBC to continue regular work activities, despite recent disruptions to their daily business activities. On October 16, 2001, NBC staff members had to relocate from their regular offices on the third floor of the NBC building in New York due to serious security concerns. Because the staff was not able to access the desktops they normally worked from, Wyse Winterm thin clients were deployed to another floor, enabling the rapid creation of an alternative production facility that allowed the Today Show staff members to return to their daily television production schedules.

"We needed a fast, reliable replacement for our PCs, which were inaccessible since they are located in restricted areas of our building. We could not afford to lose valuable production time in our deadline oriented environment," said Sally Hughes, Project Manager, NBC Production Systems. "We received the Wyse thin clients within one day, and our staff was up and running in minutes, preventing loss of valuable time and money."

In the thin-client environment, all data is stored on central servers, which can be easily managed, protected and co-located to safeguard data and ensure quick recovery if desktops are damaged or inaccessible. Wyse Winterm thin clients access server-based data and unlike PCs, do not store information on the devices themselves. This prevents businesses from losing valuable data, which can be lost in cases of disasters such as flood and fire. Thin clients can be deployed in minutes if local offices or buildings are damaged or inaccessible for any reason, allowing businesses to continue work as usual, while saving money and reducing lost productivity.

"For businesses looking to increase the security of mission-critical data, thin clients provide business continuity benefits that PC's cannot provide, and at lower costs," said Jeff McNaught, vice president of market strategy for Wyse Technology, "Thin clients are inherently more secure than PCs, since the data can be monitored and protected on the server. If anything happens to the desktops themselves, the data remains secure, and IT administrators have the option of managing the entire thin-client environment from an off-site location."
